The Public Works Authority of Qatar, Ashghal, has selected seven consortia to prequalify for the Al-Wakra and Al-Wukair wastewater treatment projects.

In April 2019, the government has launched a request for qualification (RFQ) from interested bidders to develop the waste treatment facility.

The project can accommodate up to 150,000 cubic meters of sewage per day. It includes the provision of a terminal Terminal Pump Station, Wakra Sewage Treatment Works and Treated Sewage Effluent management facilities to produce high-quality Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) and to produce treated sludge that can be disposed of in a landfill, used as fertilizer, or incinerated as needed.
