The New South Wales (NSW) state government has accepted the recommendations of an independent review that the Sydney Metro West project should continue and that Sydney Metro should complete scoping studies for up to two new stations.

The upcoming stations will be located between Sydney Olympic Park and Parramatta. The government has extended the completion date for the Sydney Metro West project by two years, now aiming for 2032 to ensure a more sustainable timeline. The review has pinpointed various opportunities to further improve the project, and it recommends their adoption. These opportunities include:

  • Enhancing planning controls at existing transport hubs to maximize potential new housing, possibly through a state environmental planning policy for transit-oriented development;
  • Improving surface transport connections at metro stations, securing sites for future stations pending detailed feasibility studies; and
  • Leveraging the value from changes in land use to efficiently fund critical enhancement works around Metro West stations, potentially utilizing the new Transport Project Component (TPC) mechanism.
