The government of China has issued a US$1 Billion Tazara renovation Proposal to refurbish the Tazara railway between Tanzania and Zambia.

The railway initiative connecting Zambia's copper belt to Dar es Salaam is anticipated to provide competition to the infrastructure link backed by the US and EU, connecting resource-rich areas to the port in Angola. China has allocated US$1 billion for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the crucial Tazara railway, which links Zambia's copper belt to the Port of Dar es Salaam, as part of its Belt and Road Initiative program. Additionally, in September 2022, the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority outlined plans to resume passenger train services between Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia.
