The Uzbek government has officially approved the Sea Breeze Uzbekistan development—a US$5 billion, all-season resort set across 577 hectares on the shores of Charvak Reservoir in the Bostanlyk district, under a 25-year lease granted via Cabinet Resolution No. 490. Despite vocal public opposition and the viral #SaveChorvoq movement, authorities have pledged strict oversight: the Ministry of Ecology will monitor air and water quality, resource use, and public health compliance, while the Ministry of Water Resources has mandated that no wastewater or sewage be discharged into the reservoir or Chirchik River. Any violation—even a single drop—could lead to immediate project suspension, lease revocation, and land seizure. An inter-agency task force headed by the General Prosecutor’s Office and Cabinet of Ministers will oversee compliance throughout development to safeguard Tashkent’s primary source of drinking water, a concern driven by fears over potential ecological damage and reduced public access to the reservoir.
