Chile Opens Economic Bid for Public Transport Corridor Project

The Consorcio Electro‑Cointer II has submitted its economic bid to the Chilean Ministry of Public Works’ (MOP) Directorate General of Concessions to develop the public transport corridor project along Route 150 and the Concepción‑Talcahuano Highway (Tramo II) in the Bío Bío region of Chile, covering the municipalities of Penco, Talcahuano, Hualpén and Concepción.

The initiative entails a US$172 million investment and covers the development of 9 km of bidirectional public transport corridors spanning the municipalities of Penco, Talcahuano, Hualpén, and Concepción in the Biobío Region. The project also incorporates two-way bike lanes and pedestrian pathways on both sides, enhancing safety and modernizing the local infrastructure. The project includes 6.7 km on Route 150 and 2.6 km on the Concepción-Talcahuano Highway, Section II, with bus stops in the medians separating the bus lanes from the outer lanes for private vehicles. It also incorporates bus stops, sidewalks and bike paths, service roads, traffic lights, road safety features, variable message signs, lighting, a control center, and other improvements. On Route 150, the crossings will be regulated, a grade-separated crossing will be enabled at the entrance to the Cosmito sector, while on the Concepción-Talcahuano Highway, the roadways in front of the El Trébol Mall will be buried and the connections with the O'Higgins, Av. Alessandri and Paicaví-Alonso de Ribera links will be redesigned.

The project is expected to be awarded in the first half of 2026, enabling construction of the corridors to start in 2029, with operations projected to begin in 2032. Once completed, the corridors will greatly enhance connectivity, reduce travel times, and improve road safety in municipalities including Penco, Talcahuano, Hualpén, and Concepción, advancing a more modern, integrated, and equitable mobility system for the community.
