The New South Wales (NSW) Government has taken control of Northern Beaches Hospital from Healthscope in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
The Northern Beaches Hospital has officially transitioned into full public ownership under NSW Health, marking a major shift in how the facility is run. From 29 April 2026, the hospital moved away from its earlier PPP model, ending nearly eight years of private operation by Healthscope and bringing the entire facility under government control. This transition means that the hospital is now fully integrated into the public health system and managed by the Northern Sydney Local Health District. All clinical and support staff were offered roles within NSW Health, with their employment conditions and entitlements transferred as part of the process. The change is intended to improve coordination, accountability, and overall patient care by aligning the hospital more closely with the wider public health network. The decision to bring the hospital back into public hands follows years of criticism of the PPP model. Reviews and audits had found that the arrangement created tension between profit motives and patient outcomes, and limited the hospital’s integration with the broader health system. A major turning point was the 2024 death of a young child, which exposed serious care concerns and triggered public pressure and policy reform.
Despite the transition, private services at the hospital will continue on an interim basis until at least June 2027. This is designed to ensure continuity of care and avoid disruption for patients while the government works on a long-term plan for how private and public services will coexist at the site.
