Peru, through PROINVERSIÓN, has approved a US$320 million wastewater treatment project in Iquitos, Loreto, in partnership with the private sector to close sanitation gaps.
The initiative, with an estimated investment of US$320 million, aims to address major sanitation gaps in the Loreto region, benefiting more than 543,000 residents across the districts of Iquitos, Punchana, Belén, and San Juan Bautista. Through this decision, PROINVERSIÓN marks an important step toward advancing sanitation infrastructure in the Peruvian Amazon, promoting sustainable solutions that enhance living conditions while safeguarding the region’s ecosystems.
The project involves building modern wastewater treatment facilities, main sewer networks, pumping stations, and a disposal site, representing a key intervention to reduce the sanitation deficit in Iquitos. It will ensure adequate treatment and safe final disposal of wastewater, thereby improving public health and helping to reduce pollution in the Nanay, Itaya, and Amazon rivers, which are the region’s primary water sources.
It is important to note that PROINVERSIÓN took charge of the project in March 2026, and it will be implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, helping to accelerate its structuring and delivery for the benefit of the local population. The Iquitos Wastewater Treatment Plant (PTAR) is expected to play a key role in enhancing tourism, supporting local economic activity, and advancing sustainable development in the Peruvian Amazon.
PROINVERSIÓN is promoting a wastewater treatment project with private sector participation in the Junín region of Peru to improve sanitation services for more than 320,000 residents.
