Viridor and Tees Valley Energy Recovery Limited (TVERL) have reached financial close with a consortium of seven local councils in the Tees Valley to deliver a £2 billion (US$2.7 billion) waste-to-energy facility at the Teesworks site in Redcar.
The project is intended to deliver a long-term solution for managing non-recyclable waste, enabling councils to take greater control of its treatment while advancing broader sustainability objectives. Planned for the Teesworks site in Redcar, the facility will handle approximately 450,000 tonnes of waste each year and produce enough electricity to supply the equivalent of 60,000 homes.
Construction is expected to commence in late 2026, with Kanadevia Inova appointed as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, further reinforcing its experience in delivering large-scale energy recovery projects alongside Viridor. The plant is expected to be operational by 2030.
