The Government of Alabama has announced launching of US$231.6 million Alabama-USA (A-USA) Corridor program to upgrade economic development infrastructure in central and southern Alabama.

Norfolk Southern is funding more than 50% of the project investment while the state of Alabama will invest US$5 million in the project. The rest of the cost will be funded from the federal Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program (CRISI) grants through the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The first phase of the A-USA Corridor project involves a US$71.6 million initiative to link the Port of Mobile with the McCalla Intermodal Facility near Birmingham. This 280-mile rail corridor will also link development sites in Etowah (Little Canoe Creek), Shelby (Calera) and Washington/Mobile (Calvert) counties, each totaling more than 1,000 acres. Phase 1 of the A-USA Corridor project involves 12 specific track, signal and yard improvements on Norfolk Southern rail lines between Mobile, Selma and Birmingham.
