Alstom announced that its Citadis light rail vehicles (LRVs) began passenger service on Toronto's Finch West Light Rapid Transit (LRT) line on December 5, 2025.
Alstom, working alongside Metrolinx, is bringing 18 Citadis light-rail vehicles into service on Toronto’s Finch West Light Rapid Transit line. The Citadis LRVs will run on a newly built corridor with a fully dedicated right-of-way, physically separated from road traffic. The 10.3-km line includes 16 stops and two terminal stations—Finch West Station in the east and Humber College Station in the west—and provides a direct pedestrian connection to the Toronto Transit Commission’s Line 1 subway at Finch West Station. Manufactured by Alstom at its Brampton facility and tested at its Kingston site, each 48-metre Citadis light rail vehicle features a spacious, fully accessible layout that can comfortably carry up to 300 passengers, including those using strollers or mobility aids. The 100% low-floor vehicles are specifically engineered for Canadian conditions and can operate reliably in temperatures as low as -38 °C. They are equipped with winterized technologies that ensure consistent performance and enhance passenger comfort, including reinforced insulation, high-capacity heating and cooling systems, and advanced snow and ice management features.
The project includes:
The project delivers several key benefits, including greater reliability and improved comfort for passengers using the city’s transit system. It helps reduce traffic congestion, greenhouse gas emissions, and fuel consumption by encouraging a shift to public transportation. Commuters benefit from shorter and more predictable travel times, enhancing overall quality of life, while the number of buses operating along Finch Avenue is reduced, easing pressure on the corridor and improving traffic flow.
