Contract awarded to upgrade Palermo - Catania high-capacity railway in Sicily

Webuild and Ghella have won a contract worth EUR1.2 billion (US$1,325 million) to build a 27km section of the new railway from Palermo to Catania in Sicily, Sicilia, Italy.

Webuild and its consortium partners have to construct a 27-km section (Lot 4A) between Caltanissetta Xirbi and Nuova Enna as part of the TEN-T corridor which includes the construction of a new rail line alongside the existing one and features 20 km of tunnels and 3 km of viaducts. This contract is part of the larger project to build 5 sections of the Palermo-Catania-Messina line.

The total number of lots or sections of the Palermo-Catania-Messina rail axis to be developed by Webuild is 5, worth around EUR 3.6 billion (US$ 3,976 million) combined. The other lots include Bicocca-Catenanuova and Nuova Enna-Dittaino between Palermo and Catania, and Taormina-Giampilieri and Fiumefreddo-Taormina/Letojanni between Catania and Messina.
