The Detroit City Council has approved the US$3 billion Henry Ford Health hospital expansion project in Detroit City, Michigan, USA.

The expansion project comprises five main elements: a new research center in partnership with Michigan State University, a 400-room patient tower, a commercial corridor featuring two new residential buildings, and a 1,500-space parking garage. Henry Ford Health, Michigan State University, Tom Gores (owner of the Detroit Pistons), and the Gilbert Family Foundation are collaborating on various aspects of the development, including the commercial corridor and a stroke and neurofibromatosis research center.

Under the plan, developers are set to receive an estimated US$231.7 million in tax revenue reimbursement over the next 35 years, with US$117 million coming from property taxes. The total developer investment for the joint venture, which includes the Henry Ford/Michigan State University Research Center, three residential/commercial projects, and a six-story parking garage, is projected to be US$773 million. Notably, Henry Ford Health has not requested any tax breaks for its portion of the US$2.2 billion expansion. The existing 877-bed hospital on West Grand Boulevard will remain operational.
