Egypt’s Civil Aviation Ministry has launched a tender for private companies to manage, operate, and develop Hurghada International Airport.
Under the initiative, the government—supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) as adviser—will select strategic partners to run and operate the airport, while ownership remains with the public sector. The IFC will act as the lead adviser for the broader national airport partnership programme, overseeing the rollout across all 11 airports earmarked for private-sector involvement.
In 2024, Egyptian airports served over 50 million passengers across almost 400,000 flights, with Hurghada ranking as the busiest airport in terms of passenger numbers. During the 2024–2025 fiscal year, Hurghada International Airport handled around 10.5 million passengers, representing a 22% year-on-year increase and highlighting the pressing need to expand capacity and enhance service quality. The airports included in this programme are Hurghada International, Sphinx International, Sharm El Sheikh International, Alexandria International, Luxor International, Aswan International, Sohag International, Assiut, Abu Simbel, El Alamein, and Marsa Matruh.
