The Economic Development and Planning Committee of eThekwini Municipality is actively driving a sustainable growth agenda by integrating environmental considerations, economic incentives, and long-term strategic planning. During its recent meeting, the Committee emphasized the shift toward clean energy, endorsing initiatives like transitioning to renewable power and energy-efficient infrastructure to address municipal energy challenges. It also reviewed and proposed updates to the city’s Economic Development Incentive Policy to attract investment and support revitalization efforts. Additionally, the Committee is overseeing the evaluation of tourism levies and advocating for catalytic mixed-use developments—such as Westown in Shongweni and Cornubia City—to generate jobs, stimulate local economies, and foster inclusive urban growth. These initiatives align with broader SDG and resilience frameworks, positioning Durban as a greener, investor-friendly city focused on long-term socioeconomic resilience.
As part of the pilot phase, ten of the city's highest energy-consuming municipal buildings—such as uShaka Marine World, the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, and several libraries and civic centres—have been selected for energy-efficient upgrades. These will include improved lighting, modern HVAC systems, solar photovoltaic installations, and enhanced water heating solutions. The initiative is backed by a conditional R7 million grant from the Department of Electricity and Energy, requiring no initial capital investment from the Municipality. Instead, costs will be recovered through performance-based agreements with energy service providers.
