The Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) has announced plans to build Southeast Asia’s first rocket launch pad by 2029, with potential sites in Pahang, Sarawak, and Sabah.
Three parties have expressed interest in the project, with one already submitting a complete feasibility study. The initiative envisions developing Malaysia’s own Earth observation satellite, establishing a “space city,” and providing rocket launch services. Planned as a public–private partnership, the launch pad will be jointly funded by the government and private investors. Construction is expected to start in early 2029 once approvals and preparations are complete. Malaysia’s equatorial position offers a strategic advantage, allowing rockets to launch more efficiently with lower fuel consumption.
