Chile's Ministry of Public Works (MOP) has unveiled the first passenger cabin for the Bicentenario Cable Car project, marking a significant milestone in the country's urban transport development.
With an investment of US$80 million, the construction of the Bicentennial Cable Car concession project will connect four communes in Santiago: Providencia, Las Condes, Vitacura, and Huechuraba. The cable car will enable passengers to travel a distance of about 3.4 km in just 13 minutes, cutting down travel time from the current 45 minutes to less than a third. The project is already 28% completed and is expected to be fully operational by January 2027.
The cabins, manufactured in Switzerland by Doppelmayr, will number 121, each with a maximum capacity of 10 passengers, allowing for the transport of 3,000 passengers per hour in each direction, for a total of 6,000 passengers per hour. The cable car will have three stations, 19 towers, a technical building at the junction point, and additional works such as access roads, landscaping, and electromechanical equipment. The project will connect Providencia and Huechuraba via a line that begins at the Canal San Carlos station and runs northwest, crossing Santiago Metropolitan Park, where a new access gate to the park will be created, and finally connecting with the Business City in Huechuraba.
