The Ministry of Public Works of Chile has begun operations on the Coihue – Angol section of the Nahuelbuta Route.

The upgraded infrastructure will enhance road safety and user services, supporting over 300,000 residents in the Biobío and Araucanía regions. The Renaico trunk toll became operational as part of the Partial Provisional Commissioning (PSPP) of the Coihue–Angol segment (Sector B) of the Ruta Nahuelbuta concession. This project, which transforms Route 180 into a dual carriageway, marks a key advancement in boosting connectivity, safety, and efficient travel for vehicles and trucks between the two regions, while offering toll-free urban routes for local traffic within Renaico. Stretching nearly 30 km between Coihue and Angol, the Renaico trunk toll road will incorporate manual collection and Stop&Go systems for TAGs, allowing for more modern and efficient services for users. The route will feature advanced technology, improved lighting, pedestrian walkways, and higher safety standards, helping to reduce travel times between the two towns and thereby boosting economic development for productive sectors such as forestry, fruit farming, and dairy.

The entire Nahuelbuta Route project includes 55 km of dual carriageway between Los Ángeles and Angol, with an investment of UF 6,125,000. The main works include the construction of 15 new bridges; 23 pedestrian walkways; 21 km of bicycle lanes; 13 underpasses; 4 overpasses; 32 km of service roads, sidewalks, pedestrian paths, and two viewing platforms. Safety-related projects include roadside control areas and an LED lighting system in pedestrian areas, interchanges, a general services area, and an emergency response area.

A distinctive feature of the project is its culturally sensitive design, featuring Mapuche-inspired bus stops, Mapudungun signage, and a landscaping plan with over 560,000 square meters of green areas across both regions. The concession spans 35 years, set to conclude in April 2053. On December 31, 2025, Section A, linking Los Ángeles to Coihue in the Biobío province, will open, introducing a new main toll in Coihue on the Nahuelbuta Route. Once both sections are fully operational, the project will greatly enhance connectivity and road safety between the Biobío and Araucanía regions.
