The General Directorate of Concessions (DGC) has announced the extension of the bidding process for the National Tsunami Early Warning System Project, which will allow for the construction and implementation of a network of 1,029 sirens to notify coastal residents of potential natural disasters of this type.
The updated timeline sets October 7, 2025, for the submission of Technical and Economic Bids and November 11, 2025, for the Opening of Economic Bids, replacing the original dates of August 22 and September 26, 2025. The National Tsunami Early Warning System Project has an allocated budget of UF 2,915,000 (US$3,035.56) and will be executed under a 20-year concession. With this revised schedule, the contract award is anticipated in March 2026, paving the way for the system to become operational by 2031.
The project includes a network of audible and visual alarm stations, including a redundant communications system and control centers, to be installed in the country's 16 regions. The national control center will be located in the Metropolitan Region. This will allow the entire population living in coastal areas at risk or danger zones to be effectively notified in the event of a tsunami. The project will include a total of 1,029 sirens, including 1,003 new sirens and 26 existing ones (in the Arica and Parinacota and O'Higgins regions). These sirens will be modernized and integrated into the system coordinated by the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (SENAPRED), providing coverage nationwide.
The alarms will be installed on an 11-meter-high steel pole supported by solar panels and energy-storage batteries. These sirens will emit a sound wave that, in case of risk, will alert the population to move to the safest areas established in each locality's evacuation plans. This system will be activated remotely, from SENAPRED's regional offices for the siren points in each region, or from the SENAPRED central office in Santiago, which will have access to all regions and will also be used as a backup. Additionally, portable cases for satellite activation are being incorporated in case the SENAPRED offices need to be evacuated to activate the system. The project will complement the preventive emergency network already in place in some regions, the "Emergency Alert System (SAE)," which sends alerts to mobile phones in the event of earthquakes, fires, or other emergencies, and the ABC System (Ambulances, Firefighters, and Carabineros).
