The Diario Oficial of Chile published the Supreme Decree that officially awards the second concession of the Araucanía Region Airport to the Belfi–Icafal consortium.
One of the main objectives of this second concession is the comprehensive modernization of the airport, which will improve its operational capacity and establish it as a key hub for the development of the Araucanía Region. One of the most significant projects under this concession is the expansion of the terminal building, which will quadruple its current surface area, increasing from 5,570 m2 to 22,276 m2. This expansion will serve more than 3 million passengers annually once the works are completed in 2031. The Second Araucanía Airport Concession also includes a series of substantial improvements to the existing infrastructure. 152 new vehicle parking spaces will be added, increasing the number of spaces from 356 to 508. Two new commercial aircraft parking spaces will also be added, increasing the number of available spaces from four to six. Two new boarding bridges will be built, in addition to the existing three. The aircraft apron will also be expanded by 20,224 m2, bringing the total surface area to 42,994 m2. Furthermore, the buildings of the Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics will be modernized, along with improvements to the cargo area and access roads to the airport.
This second concession for the terminal involves an estimated investment of US$138 million and a maximum concession term of 26 years. Construction is estimated to begin in the first quarter of 2028, with a projected duration of approximately three years.
