The Government of the State of São Paulo has inaugurated the Roberto Burle Marx State School in São José dos Campos, marking the second educational facility delivered under the New Schools PPP Program. The new school can accommodate up to 1,300 students in the final years of elementary education and high school and has been developed under a modern educational infrastructure model aimed at expanding student capacity and supporting full-time education. Under the PPP model, the São Paulo Department of Education retains responsibility for academic and educational management, while the private partner oversees the school's design, construction, maintenance, and facility management. This arrangement is intended to provide high-quality infrastructure, improved learning environments for students and staff, and service delivery monitored through performance-based indicators.
Located in Vila Adriana, the new facility is the first school delivered under the PPP program in the Paraíba Valley region. Constructed on a 7,567.31-square-meter site, the school will operate on a nine-hour full-time schedule. Beginning in the second half of the academic year, it will initially accommodate around 450 students transferred from three nearby schools, enabling them to attend classes closer to their homes. Student enrollment will increase progressively until the school reaches its full capacity. The Paraíba Valley currently has 167 schools operating under the extended school day model, serving approximately 54,300 students. This represents a modest increase from 165 schools in 2025, reflecting the region's ongoing expansion of full-time education.
The Roberto Burle Marx State School features classrooms, a resource room, four innovation spaces, a reading room, individual study areas, an auditorium, a cafeteria, a fully equipped kitchen, a covered courtyard, social interaction areas, a multi-sports gymnasium, bleachers, accessible restrooms and locker rooms for people with disabilities, facilities for educational staff, a surveillance room, and a media center. The structure was designed to provide better teaching and learning conditions, with spaces tailored to students’ development. The project is part of the Eastern Lot of the New Schools PPP Program, which foresees investments of R$ 2.1 billion (US$415 million) over the 25-year concession period. Half of the schools will be delivered in 2026, with the remainder expected by 2027. The model allows for greater efficiency in the construction and maintenance of school facilities while keeping academic management under the responsibility of the Department of Education. The New Schools PPP Program includes the delivery of 33 schools across 29 municipalities, creating thousands of new full-time educational opportunities. The initiative establishes a new infrastructure standard for the state education network, with more modern, safer schools prepared to meet educational demands.
