The Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN) reported that the international public tender for the modernization project of the Huancayo-Huancavelica Railway (Macho Train), to date, attracts the interest of seven specialized companies.

Railway project operators, construction firms, rolling stock suppliers, and other relevant companies from Latin America, Europe, and Asia are part of the interested entities. The prequalification period for potential bidders concludes on November 30, 2023. Initially, PROINVERSIÓN intended to award the project in December 2023. However, in response to requests from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) and prospective participants, the deadline has been extended until the Q1 of 2024. This extension aims to allow interested companies ample time to prepare robust proposals, fostering healthy competition and ensuring the success of the international public tender.

The Huancayo-Huancavelica Railway spans 128.7 km and includes 7 stations, 20 stops, 15 bridges, and 38 tunnels, all of which will undergo modernization. Through this project, the existing Tren Macho will receive upgraded infrastructure, including new rolling stock and an advanced signaling and control system. These enhancements will guarantee a safe, efficient, and comfortable transportation system for users, accommodating 7 daily circulations in each direction. The initiative also involves the construction of a new repair and maintenance workshop, implementation of a drainage system, protection and stabilization of slopes, and most significantly, the renewal of the railway superstructure.

PROINVERSIÓN, acting on behalf of the MTC, will grant a 30-year concession for this project. Its objective is to provide transportation services to the populace, adhering to international quality standards, and benefiting over 1.2 million people from both regions.
