The Ethiopian government has announced that most of the Addis Ababa light rail system's trains have been halted due to a lack of spare parts.

US$60 million is required to repair more than 23 light rail trains in Addis Ababa. The project includes the construction of a light rail system in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, which operates in two directions. The 31.6 km system is the first light rail and rapid transit in East Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. The light rail system was built to make up for the lack of transport in Addis Ababa, home to 4 million people. The length of the east-west line of the system is 17.4 km, and the north-south line is 16.9 km.

China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group (CREEC) built the project and 85% of its $475 million cost was financed with a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China. If all trains were running, the system would carry twice as many people as the 56,000 currently carried.
