Surrey city council (UK) has approved changes to its PFI contract to change street light bulbs to LEDs. Surrey county is located in the southeast of England, near the border of London city. The city council will spend GBP20 million (US$25.5 million) in the next three years to change approximately 89,000 light bulbs around the county.

Surrey city council currently spends GBP3.5 million (US$25.5 million) each year for street lighting. Council has tried dimming the lights in the night to reduce the annual cost. But it was found that cutting or dimming the light is not viable. Thus the councilors approved the change of light bulbs. The aim for change light bulbs to LEDs is to reduce energy consumption by 60% and reduced CO2 emissions.

The PFI contract was signed with 'Skanska' and 'John Laing' both having 50/50 stake. Both companies will be responsible for maintaining all street lights and illuminated signs and bollards throughout the contract period. The contract period is of 25 years. The council has now issued a Change Notice under the PFI contract.
