The University of Galway is considering using its Nuns’ Island properties in Galway for future student accommodation as part of a broader regeneration plan for the historic inner-city district.
The university owns a significant portion of the 15-acre Nuns’ Island area, including several buildings that have remained vacant or underused for years. Local campaigners and political representatives have argued that these properties should be redeveloped into affordable student housing instead of relying on leasing beds from private accommodation providers.
The redevelopment project has been under discussion since at least 2017, when the university and Galway City Council began working together on a long-term masterplan for the area. Earlier concepts for the site included student residences, academic facilities, public spaces, arts venues and community amenities aimed at revitalising Nuns’ Island while preserving its historical character.
Progress on the project received a boost after €4.3 million (US$5 million) in Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) support was allocated for planning and design work. University officials said the project remains in the planning phase, with continued consultation involving the local authority and community stakeholders.
