The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Patriot Rail Company, through its subsidiary Salt Lake, Garfield & Western Railway (SLGW), have broken ground on the US$31 million Northwest Quadrant Freight Mobility Project – West Interchange in Salt Lake City, Utah. The project is being jointly funded by UDOT, Patriot Rail, federal grants, and a contribution from the Utah Inland Port Authority. Patriot Rail and UDOT will jointly oversee project delivery, while the principal construction contract has been awarded to Paragon Construction Systems. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

The project involves constructing a new rail interchange and switching yard south of Interstate 80 near Salt Lake City International Airport. It will relocate SLGW's train-building and switching operations from the existing East Yard in the Poplar Grove area to the new West Interchange. The development includes new rail tracks, connections, switching infrastructure, and supporting facilities designed to improve freight movement and create a more efficient interchange between regional and national rail networks.

Once operational, the West Interchange will significantly reduce rail switching activities through residential neighborhoods on Salt Lake City's west side. By moving train assembly operations away from the East Yard, the project is expected to reduce blocked road crossings, shorten delays for motorists and emergency vehicles, lower train horn noise, improve air quality, and enhance public safety. The project will also strengthen freight rail connectivity, support regional supply chains, and facilitate future industrial and economic growth in the Northwest Quadrant of Salt Lake County.
