The City of Gold Coast has launched an Expressions of Interest (EOI) process with creative partners Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin to redevelop the former Miami Depot site on Australia’s Gold Coast into the Miami Arts Depot, a mixed-use creative industries precinct focused on film, gaming, technology and visual effects. 

The proposed four-hectare development in Miami on the southern Gold Coast is designed to become a hub for screen production, visual effects, gaming, technology and innovation industries, while also incorporating residential, retail, hospitality and public community spaces.

The project is being promoted as one of the Gold Coast’s largest urban renewal initiatives. According to the council, the precinct would feature film production facilities, creative workspaces, cafes and shops, landscaped open-air areas, fountains and plazas aimed at creating a vibrant mixed-use destination. Oscar-winning filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and costume designer Catherine Martin are involved in the project through their production company Bazmark, which has been named as an anchor tenant and creative partner. 

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the project aims to diversify the local economy beyond tourism and construction by supporting creative industries and attracting investment. The council estimates MAD could generate about AUD $130 million (US$92.8 million) annually and support around 1,000 jobs once operational. The precinct is also expected to complement the city’s expanding screen-production sector, which already hosts major international film and television projects. 

The EOI process will remain open until July 31, 2026, after which the council plans to shortlist development partners and select a preferred proponent by mid-2027. Construction could begin later in the decade if approvals and partnerships proceed as planned.
