The Brazilian federal government has announced a historic investment of BRL 825.7 million (US$ 146 million) from the Amazon Fund to support IBAMA's largest initiative to combat illegal deforestation in the Amazon. This funding will finance the FORTFISC project (Strengthening Environmental Enforcement for the Control of Illegal Deforestation in the Amazon), marking the most significant financial commitment in the Amazon Fund's history.
The FORTFISC project aims to enhance IBAMA's operational capabilities through several key initiatives:
Acquisition of helicopters equipped with ballistic protection and fixed-wing drones to improve aerial surveillance.
Construction of four air bases and eight helipads in strategic forest locations to facilitate rapid response.
Establishment of a national training center, deployment of mobile bases, provision of field tents, VHF radios, and satellite internet to support operations in remote areas.
Implementation of digital tools and artificial intelligence for remote infractions, mercury and timber tracking, and the development of the Zero Deforestation System (LabDeZ).
This initiative aligns with Brazil's broader environmental strategies, including the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon (PPCDAm), the National REDD+ Strategy (ENREDD+), and the National Policy on Climate Change (PNMC).
