The Comisión de Evaluación Ambiental de la Región Metropolitana has unanimously approved the Environmental Impact Study for the new National Cancer Institute, enabling the Sociedad Concesionaria Instituto Nacional del Cáncer S.A. to advance the construction of a high-complexity cancer hospital in the commune of Independencia in Santiago, Chile.
The project, led by the Sociedad Concesionaria Instituto Nacional del Cáncer S.A., will establish a high-complexity cancer hospital in the commune of Independencia in Santiago, Chile, on the grounds of the former Hospital San José. The facility is designed not only for specialized clinical oncology care but also for teaching and research activities, positioning it as a national reference center in cancer treatment. The institute will be a large medical complex covering around 86,000 m² and is expected to serve a population of approximately 11.6 million people aged 15 and over, including residents of the Metropolitan Region and beyond. Its clinical capacity will include 249 hospital beds, multiple major and minor surgery theaters, chemotherapy stations, and advanced equipment such as linear particle accelerators for radiotherapy.
After the environmental approval, preliminary construction work is projected to begin in April 2026, with full hospital construction slated to start around July 2026. The facility’s provisional service launch is planned for August 19, 2030, followed by a full, definitive opening approximately one year later. Once operational, the institute will significantly expand Chile’s capacity for comprehensive cancer care, including outpatient and inpatient treatment, supportive services, and complementary specialties.
