A groundbreaking ceremony led by Chile’s President Gabriel Boric marks the start of construction on the Tunnel Lo Ruiz, a transformative infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity for the Renca and Quilicura districts in northern Santiago.

This important road project will directly impact the residents of the Quilicura and Renca communities through a 5.8-kilometer stretch that will allow for more efficient traffic flow, reducing travel times by up to 20%. The project includes 100,000 square meters of green space, three community parks, and 3 km of bike paths. A 22,000 square meter recreational park will also be built under the viaducts.

The initiative entails an investment of US$450 million and details that it includes the construction of two 1.5-km tunnels—both with two one-way lanes—under Lo Ruiz Hill, which will connect the General Velásquez Axis with Américo Vespucio Norte. The project will be completed over 50 months and is expected to be operational by mid-2029. It will be developed by Grupo Vías Chile, which holds the concession for the Autopista Central highway.
