The General Directorate of Public Works Concessions opened the economic bid presented by Grupo Costanera SpA for the development of the Route 5 Chacao-Chonchi section.
This new concession, the first on Chiloé Island, includes the construction of a new bridge over the Pudeto River, approximately 750 meters long, and six other bridges. The project also includes improvements to the existing route, road safety improvements, walkways with universal accessibility, a service area, and an emergency response area, as well as seven wildlife crossings, also known as ecological corridors, 14 grade-separated interchanges, and bypasses in the main towns. Other notable works include the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, the construction of 40 pedestrian walkways, bus stops, intersection regulation and level access, widening of shoulders, 41 km of service roads in various sections, improvement of sanitation and drainage systems, implementation of road control and safety features, lighting, landscaping, emergency telephones, a general service area, and an emergency response area. The first concession for the Route 5 Chacao–Chonchi section begins at the southern access point of the future Chacao Bridge and ends at the northern access fork to Chonchi, which will facilitate traffic flow in an area with high accident rates. This project is linked to the Chonchi–Quellón section, the comprehensive study for which was awarded in June 2025.
The contract award is projected for Q4 of 2025, after which the Detailed Engineering Project and the Environmental Impact Assessment Study will begin. Thus, the construction phase of the project is expected to begin in 2028, and all works are expected to be operational by 2033.
