The Board of Directors of the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) granted Sociedad Portuaria Río Córdoba SA a concession for the development of a multipurpose maritime terminal in the municipality of Ciénaga, Magdalena Department.
This project, with a 30-year term and an investment exceeding USD 82.8 million, aims to promote the development of multimodal transport by connecting to the Atlantic Railway and, through it, to the La Dorada-Chiriguaná Central Railway Corridor, the Pozos Colorados-Galán pipeline, and the Ruta del Sol highway. The Río Córdoba port concession is intended to support the management and operation of various types of cargo, including dry bulk, general cargo, liquid bulk, and containerized goods, facilitating both export and import activities. Over the 30-year concession period, it is expected to handle more than 160 million tons of cargo along with approximately 197,400 containers.
The new port concession will develop an infrastructure that completely changes what existed previously, which was dedicated to the movement of thermal coal, taking advantage of the rail connectivity conditions of the port area of Ciénaga – Magdalena as well as its access channel that has a depth of 21 meters throughout the year, so that more than 90% of the terminal's cargo will be moved by rail by Ferrocarriles del Norte de Colombia SA (Fenoco), and the southern section with the Chiriguaná (Cesar)-La Dorada (Caldas) corridor, the point where the modal transfer will be carried out to the different origins and destinations in the center of the country.
The port terminal will be equipped with infrastructure optimized for efficient rail logistics, enabling the safe arrival and departure of trains consisting of up to 150 cars while maintaining high safety standards. Under the terms of the concession agreement, Sociedad Portuaria Río Córdoba S.A. is responsible for undertaking key development works, including dredging the maneuvering basin and access channel, as well as building the dock, access walkway, and approach ramp.
