The government of President Gustavo Petro, through the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI), signed the commencement documents for the development of feasibility studies for the Villavicencio – Puerto Gaitán Railway Corridor, a 193.5-km railway project that seeks to connect the capital of the Meta department with the municipality of Puerto Gaitán.

The studies and technical designs to bring the project to the feasibility stage will be carried out by the Meta Railway Consortium (HE) for Lot 1, between Villavicencio and Puerto López. The Railway Connection Consortium (INT) will be in charge of Lot 2, between Puerto López and Puerto Gaitán. Meanwhile, the oversight of both sections will be handled by the Llanos Railway Consortium BC. The cost of the studies totals COP 60.551 billion (COP 52.811 billion for consulting services and COP 7.739 billion for oversight). The deadline for submitting the feasibility study is 7 months for Lot 1 and 10 months for Lot 2.

The two Consortia will be responsible for carrying out, in each of the sections, the analysis of demand, land, environmental and social aspects, railway engineering, intermodal systems, operation and maintenance, Capex and Opex estimation, work scheduling, as well as the tariff evaluation and territorial analysis. The pre-feasibility study for this project outlines the construction of 193.5 km of railway. This corridor also includes the construction of 18 km of bridges and has an estimated cargo volume of 388–932 tons per year by 2080, primarily consisting of grains such as soybeans and corn.
