Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) announces the signing of an agreement with QatarEnergy, Qatar Electricity & Water Company Q.P.S.C., and Sumitomo Corporation (representing a consortium with Luluah Sky Energy Holding Ltd) to increase the country’s electricity and water production through the construction of Ras Abu Fontas power & water facility.
The facility will have a production capacity of 2400 MW and 110 million gallons per day (MGD). The overall cost of the Project is QAR 13.5 billion (USD 3.7 billion). The agreement also stipulates the purchase of power and water from the facility, which is expected to provide about 23% of Qatar’s total power and 20% of its water production.
The agreement outlines a three-stage commissioning schedule for the facility, which is expected to significantly enhance the nation’s electricity and water production. The initial power output of 836 MW is planned to begin on April 25, 2028. Full water production, reaching 110 million gallons per day (MGD), is set for August 1, 2028. The facility is projected to become fully operational by June 1, 2029, delivering its total power capacity of 2,400 MW.
