The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has begun construction of the city’s first bio-CNG plant with a private partner at Amausi in Lucknow to convert municipal waste into clean fuel and organic fertiliser. The ₹80-crore (US$8.8 million) project is expected to generate significant revenue for the LMC once it becomes operational. The civic authority is projected to earn around ₹1.5 crore (US$165,644) annually through royalty income and charges for supplying cow dung. Additionally, it will receive a fixed monthly payment of ₹11 lakh (US$12,147.2) from the private operator, ensuring a consistent revenue stream. The municipal body will also reduce fuel expenses by approximately ₹10 lakh per month, as bio-CNG supplied for municipal vehicles will be priced about 5% lower than prevailing market rates. The LMC has leased 7.5 acres of land near the shooting range in Nadarganj to a private company for a period of 20 years to develop the facility. The plant will be designed to handle up to 300 tonnes of organic waste per day. It will primarily use cow dung supplied by Kanha Gaushala, which produces more than 150 tonnes daily, along with additional feedstock such as kitchen waste, vegetable market waste, and agricultural residues. The daily treatment of organic waste at the facility is expected to ease the burden on landfills and enhance overall cleanliness in the city.
Although the land was allocated in 2023 and the MoU was signed earlier, the project experienced delays in implementation. The plant was originally planned to be inaugurated in November 2025, but the commissioning timeline has now been rescheduled to March 2026.
