The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, has revised the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for establishing a birds park on VOC Zoo land by retaining and repurposing existing structures and bird cages, and has engaged the private team that built the aviary in Trichy to execute the project under a public-private partnership (PPP) mode.

The updated DPR emphasizes keeping and adapting the existing infrastructure of the closed zoo, including the aviaries. While the original plan was estimated at ₹10 crore (US$1 million), the revised proposal brings the cost down to about ₹6–7 crore (US$0.7 million). The project is proposed to be implemented through a public–private partnership (PPP) model, and the revised DPR is likely to be finalized by the end of February 2026.

The aviary is proposed to come up on 4.5 acres and is designed to house roughly 1,000 birds representing about 40 species. In contrast, the Trichy Birds Park — planned after the Coimbatore project — was completed in about a year at a cost of ₹18.63 crore (US$2 million). Nearly a year has passed since the Trichy park opened to visitors, whereas the Coimbatore birds park project is still only at the planning stage. In the meantime, the corporation earmarked ₹75 lakh (US$81,639.8) in its 2024–25 budget to transform the zoo site into an open reading area. However, with the commissioner deciding to revive the aviary plan, the DPR has now been updated accordingly.
