The Czech Republic has announced the tender for the purchase of 133 electric trains along with long-term maintenance, with a total value of US$3.3 billion.
České dráhy (ČD), the national railway operator, has launched a framework agreement for the delivery of dual-system electric trains, each up to 106 meters in length and capable of reaching speeds of 160 km/h. Each train must provide a minimum of 380 seats across both first and second class. The initial, firm order includes 66 trains, along with 15 years of maintenance services. An additional 67 trains may be ordered later based on future needs. The project will receive partial funding from the European Union's structural funds. Deliveries of the new fleet are expected to start at the end of 2029. These new trains will replace the aging CityElefant double-decker units, originally produced by Skoda Group between 1997 and 2013.
At the close of 2024, Škoda Group fulfilled a significant contract with ČD, supplying 110 trains based on the RegioPanter platform, including four battery-powered models. These trains align with the requirements of the new tender, offering dual-system operation and high-speed performance. ČD's broader goal is to modernize its fleet, enhance passenger service quality, and boost the energy efficiency of its transport operations.
