The National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) has announced that investments totaling US$153 billion in social projects and economic compensation will be the direct benefits for communities in the south of the country that will result from the construction of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project of the El Estanquillo-Popayán highway corridor.

The project, which foresees investments of US$8.82 billion (between construction and operation with figures from December 2024), includes the improvement of the El Estanquillo-Popayán road, and the construction of the El Estanquillo-Timbío variant, through a PPP concession model, which connects the capital of Cauca with the municipalities of Timbío, Rosas, Patía, El Tambo, La Sierra and Sotará (Paispamba) and generates a positive impact on the mobilization of the municipalities of the departments of Nariño and Putumayo, towards the north of the country.

The initiative has a two-year preconstruction period, 4.5 years of construction, 18 years of operation and maintenance, and a six-month contract reversion and settlement period. The project includes 14 tunnels totaling 17.9 km, 125 vehicular bridges, 62.4 km of dual carriageway, 9 new at-grade and grade-separated intersections, 15 pedestrian bridges, and the acquisition of more than 600 rural and suburban properties. One of the challenges of this project is the complex geology of the area, which will be overcome by the project's engineering specifications, while simultaneously creating redundancy in the road network in this part of the country and reducing vulnerability.
