The National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) has approved the expansion of Simón Bolívar International Airport in Santa Marta, Colombia.
Under the initiative, the airport’s capacity will rise from 3.6 million to 5.8 million passengers annually. To support this, the ANI has signed a contract amendment with the Aeropuertos de Oriente concessionaire to expand the terminal’s infrastructure by an additional 3,740 square meters, thereby boosting its operational capabilities. With an investment of US$75 billion and a maximum execution period of two years, the international airport will undergo significant upgrades to its main terminal, boarding platform, and supporting equipment, enabling a 60% boost in service capacity. Key enhancements include the expansion of domestic and international boarding gates, a larger baggage claim area, improved ventilation systems in high-traffic zones, and the addition of a new mezzanine level for retail outlets. A VIP lounge will also be introduced, enhancing the airport’s service offerings and overall passenger experience.
With the expanded capacity for passenger processing, travelers will experience shorter wait times at baggage claim, check-in, and security checkpoints, resulting in greater comfort and a more streamlined airport experience. These improvements complement ongoing road access upgrades led by the Municipal Government, including a 1.8-km stretch of rigid pavement, aimed at enhancing connectivity, safety, and ease of travel for both residents and visitors.
Between January and June 2025, Simón Bolívar International Airport handled a total of 1,927,632 passengers, reflecting its growing importance as a regional hub. The airport currently spans 14,525 square meters, with a runway length of 1,800 meters. It is served by several major carriers, including Avianca, Latam, Wingo, Copa, and Jetsmart. To further enhance capacity and passenger comfort, the Aeropuertos de Oriente concessionaire will undertake voluntary improvements valued at US$5.85 billion, focusing on expanding boarding gate capacity and introducing new commercial amenities within the terminal.
