The National Infrastructure Agency and the Central Railway Concession signed the Deed of Initiation, which materializes the National Government's commitment to reactivating the La Dorada-Chiriguaná railway corridor.
By signing the Commencement Certificate for Colombia’s first railway public-private partnership (PPP), the Government of Change is moving forward with its goal to enhance freight transport, generate regional jobs, and support a shift to a more sustainable transport system. The project involves a US$3.4 billion investment, and its pre-construction phase—spanning the next 15 months—will include detailed studies, design work, development of the construction plan, and property acquisitions.
The Central Railway Line concession will begin the 49-month construction phase, which includes a comprehensive intervention on the track and its components, including the rehabilitation of the railway superstructure, maintenance of 98 bridges, rolling stock (4 locomotives), installation of a signaling and train control system, the reconstruction of 2 railway workshops and the implementation of an intermodal platform in La Dorada with a capacity of 0.8 million tons/year.
The project is set to increase freight capacity from 2.8 million to 5.5 million tons annually, helping to lower logistics costs and strengthen a vital corridor of Colombia’s national rail network linking the country’s interior with Caribbean ports. It is expected to generate over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, stimulating economic growth across 25 municipalities in the departments of Caldas, Antioquia, Santander, Bolívar, and Cesar. Through this initiative, the Ministry of Transportation and the National Infrastructure Agency continue to advance a more modern, efficient, and resilient logistics system—supporting Colombia’s shift toward cleaner, more competitive, and equitable transportation infrastructure.
