Chile's Ministry of Public Works (MOP) has begun installing 121 passenger cabins for the Teleférico Bicentenario in Santiago, Chile.
The country's first public urban cable car system represents an investment of US$80 million and will carry up to 6,000 passengers per hour, linking the municipalities of Providencia and Huechuraba in 13 minutes. The Bicentenario Cable Car is expected to cut travel times from 45 minutes to 13 minutes while offering modern cabins equipped with safety features, universal accessibility and onboard Wi-Fi. The project is 85% complete, with 80 of the planned 121 cable car cabins already in place at Huechuraba. Once operational, the system will cut travel times from about an hour to just 13 minutes. Manufactured in Switzerland by Doppelmayr, the 121 cabins will each accommodate up to 10 passengers, enabling the system to carry 3,000 passengers per hour in each direction, or 6,000 passengers per hour in total.
The cable car system will comprise three stations, 19 support towers and a technical building at the turnaround point, along with access roads, landscaping and electromechanical infrastructure. The project is scheduled to be fully completed and enter service in Q1 of 2027.
