The Webuild Group has commissioned the Riachuelo wastewater treatment System in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Riachuelo Wastewater Treatment System, developed in three major phases—two of which were delivered by the Webuild Group—is now operational following the commissioning of Lot 2 by Webuild’s subsidiary, Fisia Italimpianti. Co-financed by the World Bank, the project is a key piece of infrastructure that will improve sanitation services for more than 4.3 million people in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area and contribute to the ecological restoration of the Río de la Plata. Once fully active, the system will process up to 2.3 million cubic meters of wastewater daily and extend sewer services to an additional 1.5 million people across 14 municipalities.
Lot 2, expected to be handed over to the client AYSA by the end of July, includes an inlet pumping station with a capacity of 36 cubic meters per second, a pretreatment facility capable of handling 27 cubic meters per second, and an outlet pumping station. As the core component of the three-part Riachuelo System, Lot 2 plays a critical role: Lot 1 is responsible for collecting the wastewater, while Lot 3—also delivered by Webuild—transports the treated water through a 12-km subfluvial tunnel constructed 40 meters beneath the Río de la Plata riverbed. This tunnel, with a diameter of 4.3 meters, conveys the water to a diffuser system made up of 34 vertical steel pipes (risers) that evenly and safely disperse the treated effluent along the river floor.
