Grupo Costanera SpA has submitted the technical and financial bid to develop the Route 5 Chacao-Chonchi Section toll highway concession project in the province of Chiloé, Los Lagos Region, Chile.

The project, backed by an investment of USD 594 million, has drawn interest from Grupo Costanera SpA to upgrade Route 5 by expanding much of its 126 km stretch into a dual carriageway. The initiative aims to enhance safety and service levels, incorporating innovative features such as wildlife crossings. It is expected to reduce travel times, improve road safety, and support tourism and economic growth on Chiloé Island. The concession covers the segment of Route 5 starting from the southern end of the future Chacao Bridge and extending to the northern entrance of Chonchi, easing traffic in an area known for high accident rates. This development is also tied to a future comprehensive study of the Chonchi–Quellón section. Key components of the project include the construction of a new 750-meter-long bridge over the Pudeto River, along with six additional bridges. The initiative also entails upgrades to the existing road infrastructure, enhanced safety features, universally accessible pedestrian walkways, a designated service zone, and an emergency response area. Moreover, the project will incorporate seven wildlife crossings (ecological corridors), 14 grade-separated interchanges, and bypasses around major towns along the route.

The concession also covers the refurbishment of current infrastructure, the construction of 40 pedestrian overpasses, installation of bus stops, upgrades to intersections and level access points, and the widening of road shoulders. It includes 41 km of service roads in different segments, enhancements to drainage and sanitation systems, and the installation of road safety and control systems. Additional features include lighting, landscaping, emergency call boxes, a general service zone, and a designated emergency response area.
