The Goa government has attracted interest from seven companies in the bidding process to build new bus stands in Mapusa and Margao under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with estimated costs of around INR1.92 billion (US$21.3 million) for Mapusa and INR2.51 billion (US$28 million) for Margao in Goa, India.

Residents have long awaited these facilities because the current bus terminals are in poor condition, lacking basic amenities like proper seating and toilets, and become particularly uncomfortable during the monsoon. The Mapusa bus stand will have over 700 parking spaces, including 500 for two-wheelers, around 200 for four-wheelers, and staff parking. The total area to be developed is over 27,000 sqm. Facilities like two AC waiting lounges with WiFi, a cargo service facility, a restaurant, a ticket area including automatic ticket vending machines, and passenger convenience amenities — separate toilets/washrooms for men and women, baby-feeding rooms, drinking water, a help desk/information assistance booth for all transport modes, wheelchair access, luggage trolleys, baggage trolley facilities and an ATM have also been planned.

The Margao bus stand will have around 650 parking spaces, including 510 for two-wheelers, 100 for four-wheelers, and staff parking. The total area to be developed is over 46,000 sqm. The operation period for the private player for the bus port will be a minimum of 33 years, and for the business complex, a minimum of 57 years.

The government will carry out the modernization and full redevelopment of the Mapusa bus terminal, including its operation, maintenance, and eventual transfer, under a design–build–finance–operate–transfer (DBFOT) model. The project’s design is required to reflect the state’s architectural style and cultural identity, as well as the local character of the bus terminal area, while ensuring the facility is equipped to provide the required level of services for immediate use.
