Webuild has signed a contract worth approximately EUR 2 billion (US$2.3 billion) for the construction of the T2 section of Rome’s Metro.
Webuild will be responsible for EUR 673 million (US$790 million) of the contract’s total value. Commissioned by Roma Metropolitane on behalf of Roma Capitale, the project will be delivered by the Metro C consortium, led by Webuild in collaboration with Vianini Lavori. This phase represents one of Rome’s most technically demanding infrastructure projects, as the new section of the metro line will run beneath the Tiber River in a highly sensitive area rich in archaeological and historical significance. The T2 section will extend for four kilometres between the Venezia Station and Clodio/Mazzini, adding four new stations: Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano (interconnected with Line A), and Clodio/Mazzini. Chiesa Nuova and San Pietro will be archaeological stations, designed to celebrate the city's heritage and integrate it seamlessly with the urban setting.
San Pietro Station, positioned within the gardens of Castel Sant'Angelo, will be the deepest and most architecturally distinctive station along this section of the line, reaching a depth of 48 metres below ground. Its design will harmonize with the newly planned layout of the surrounding square, while carefully preserving the integrity of nearby historic landmarks. Chiesa Nuova Station will be built beneath the square bearing its name, near the historically and artistically significant Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella and the Oratorio dei Filippini. A major technical challenge of the project involves the construction of diaphragm walls reaching depths of up to 90 metres, using advanced technologies previously proven effective during work on Venezia Station. Additionally, the metro line will run 25 metres beneath the Tiber River. Webuild is currently completing the final testing of the San Giovanni–Colosseo/Fori Imperiali segment of Metro Line C, with the archaeological stations Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali expected to be delivered by September. Upon full completion, Line C will span 26 kilometres and feature 29 stations, 22 of which are already in service. The line will provide a direct connection between Rome’s southeastern suburbs and the city’s northwestern areas.
