The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has awarded the contract for the extension of Riyadh Metro’s Red Line to the Webuild-led Consortium, which includes India's L&T, Saudi Arabia's NESMA and France's ALSTOM.
The project covers the design and construction of an 8.4 km new driverless metro line, 1.3 km of which will be on viaduct and the remaining 7.1 km in tunnels. It also includes five stations – three of which are underground, as well as the signaling systems. A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) will be used for the excavation of the tunnel section. The project aims to integrate the new section into Riyadh’s wider six-line, fully automated metro system, which spans 176 km. The extension will add two additional stations serving King Saud University and support emerging developments across the city. It will also link the existing Red Line and the broader metro network to Diriyah—the first Saudi capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site—where a major regeneration programme is underway to establish the area as a premier cultural and tourism destination while safeguarding its Najd heritage and architectural identity.
Webuild has extensive expertise in metro construction, having delivered more than 890 km of new metro lines worldwide. Its most recent project openings include the Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali archeostations on Rome’s Metro Line C, the final stretch of Milan’s M4 line, and the Thessaloniki Metro, Greece’s first fully driverless system. The Group is currently engaged in major metro projects such as Lines 15 West and 16 of the Grand Paris Express in France, Lines 2 and 4 of the Lima Metro in Peru, and the Sydney Metro–Western Sydney International Airport project in Australia. In Italy, Webuild is completing the Capodichino station on Naples Metro Line 1 and has recently secured the contract for the construction of Naples’ new Metro Line 10.
