Webuild, together with partner Vianini Lavori as part of the Metro C Consortium, has been awarded a €776 million (US$902 million) contract to design and build the T1 section of Rome’s Metro Line C — linking the Clodio/Mazzini and Farnesina stations in the northern quadrant of the Italian capital.
The contract award comes after the public inauguration in December of Line C’s Colosseo/Fori Imperiali and Porta Metronia stations. These two “archaeo-stations” extended the line by 3 km and introduced a connection to Line B. During construction, the sites also served as a major cultural effort, with over 625,000 cubic metres of archaeological material carefully excavated along the section of Line C stretching from Monte Compatri/Pantano in the east to Clodio/Mazzini. The Consortium will manage both the design and construction of Section T1, which will be developed in coordination with Section T2. Section T2, now in the executive design phase, will feature Line C’s first crossing beneath the Tiber River. Awarding T1 to the Consortium will allow mechanized excavation to continue seamlessly from Farnesina to Piazza Venezia, preventing fragmentation of the works. At the same time, construction at Venezia station is advancing as part of the project’s second major phase. Line C will eventually extend for 29 km with 31 stations, from the eastern terminus at Monte Compatri/Pantano to Farnesina. To date, 24 stations have been completed from the eastern terminus to Colosseo/Fori Imperiali in the historic centre.
The work on the line strengthens the Group’s global track record in the sector, with more than 890 km of metro lines built. The Group is leading projects such as Line 15 and 16 of the Grand Paris Express in France, Lines 2 and 4 in Lima, Peru, and the Sydney Metro in Australia. In Italy, after completing Milan's M4, Webuild is working in Naples on the finalisation of the Capodichino Station, confirming its global role in driving the transition toward increasingly sustainable and technologically advanced urban mobility.
