The National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) announced that with the delivery of 35.76 km of newly-constructed roadway between the municipalities of Remedios and Vegachí in Antioquia, Colombia, the 4G-corridor project Autopista al Río Magdalena 2 has completed its construction phase and now enters operation and maintenance.
Backed by an investment of COP 2.44 trillion (US$649 million) in Capex and COP 1.56 trillion (US$415 million) in Opex (as of December 2024), the Río Magdalena 2 Highway has reached the end of its construction phase, delivering a major boost to national connectivity. By directly linking the southwest and central-western regions of Colombia with the Port of Cartagena, as well as connecting the northeast of Antioquia to the Troncal del Magdalena 1 concession through Puerto Berrío, this initiative strengthens economic, social, and regional development. With these strategic connections, it is expected to become one of the country’s most significant road corridors.
Functional Unit 1 comprises 35.76 km of the project, situated in the northeastern area of the Antioquia department. This section starts at the junction with the Autopistas del Nordeste concession in Remedios and extends to Vegachí, where it links to UF2, already in operation since February 2025. It consists of a two-way single-carriageway (one lane per direction) featuring 16.5 kilometers of additional overtaking lanes in designated segments, which greatly enhances travel speeds and road safety. Furthermore, a new roundabout in Vegachí improves the connection between the national highway, the regional road network, and local access routes, strengthening overall connectivity in the area.
UF1 includes the construction of 23 structures aimed at improving the route’s efficiency and safety, consisting of 16 bridges and viaducts, four underpasses, two overpasses, and a pedestrian bridge located in the El Tigre sector of Vegachí. The pedestrian bridge ensures secure passage for students accessing the nearby school, demonstrating the project’s focus on community well-being. In addition, the corridor is equipped with 13 SOS posts, one fixed variable message board, two mobile message boards, 21 security cameras, and a weather monitoring station, all designed to support constant roadway surveillance. This section also incorporates critical operational infrastructure, including the Santa Isabel toll station at km 57+600 in the Santa Isabel area of Remedios and an operations center at km 48+100 in the San Cristóbal sector of Vegachí. These facilities will enable year-round, 24/7 services such as road supervision, mobile repair units, towing, and emergency medical assistance for travelers.
