Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has decided to obtain a loan from Odisha Urban Infrastructure Development Fund (OUIDF) for the construction of a shopping complex in place of the demolished Giri Market in Berhampur, Odisha, India.
Earlier, the BeMC had planned to develop the market complex under a public–private partnership (PPP) model. However, after reassessing earlier decisions and to retain ownership of the proposed market, the corporation has opted to undertake the construction on its own and will now approach the government to secure the required loan. In November 2022, the BeMC demolished the Giri Market—one of Berhampur’s major marketplaces located in the city center—after it was declared structurally unsafe. Originally established during the British era as Victoria Market, the facility housed more than 170 shops and was renamed Giri Market on May 24, 1974. The redevelopment plan includes expanding the market area by incorporating the adjacent vegetable and fish markets. The project is expected to involve an investment of approximately INR40 crore (US$4.4 million) for construction across about two acres of land. Once completed, the new market complex will feature around 290 retail outlets along with various supporting and ancillary facilities.
The Goa cabinet on Monday approved seven development projects collectively valued at ₹2,500 crore (US$278 million), to be taken on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis in the coastal state. ...
