ACCIONA, in a consortium with local company BRK, has been awarded the contract for the concession of treated water distribution and sewerage services in 151 municipalities of Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil.
The 35-year concession involves an investment of BRL 15.4 billion (US$2.8 billion) to upgrade and modernise water supply and sanitation systems, ensuring access to treated drinking water as well as wastewater collection and treatment for approximately seven million people. Under the agreement, the consortium will manage water distribution and wastewater services across the municipalities, while Companhia Pernambucana de Saneamento (Compesa) will continue to produce and sell treated water to the concessionaire. The contract also sets out phased targets to reduce water losses and includes measures to mitigate and respond to supply interruptions.
The Pernambuco project is ACCIONA's third water project in Brazil so far in 2025. In January 2025, ACCIONA signed a concession contract with Sanepar (Paraná Sanitation Company) for sanitary sewer services in 48 municipalities in the western and central-eastern micro-regions of the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil. The public-private contract, worth €324 million, covers investment in sanitation infrastructure, including sewerage networks, pumping stations, and wastewater treatment plants, as well as their operation and maintenance for 24 years. In October 2025, the company entered into a concession agreement with Companhia Espírito Santense de Saneamento (CESAN) to deliver urban sanitation services across eight municipalities in the state of Espírito Santo. The project covers wastewater treatment operations and commercial support services, with total planned investments of approximately €85 million over the 23-year concession term.
