Colombia invests to reactivate rail network

The Colombian Government has announced that COP2 billion (US$440.570) will be invested to advance the reactivation of the railway network in the national territory.

At this stage, the process of reopening the national railway line is ongoing. The Colombian government also plans to implement projects to promote an intermodal system in the country, including the Train project, which aim is to connect the Pacific region with the Colombian Caribbean. The government held a series of meetings with firms that showed interest in developing the Train project. Stakeholders have expressed willingness and resources to create trains that will depart from Buenaventura and reach Uraba or the Atlantic coast. The train project, which is designed to connect the departments of Atlantico, Bolivar and Magdalena, has lost its relevance, but it is planned to be resumed.

Colombia has a 3,316 km train network, although only 9% is in use. The network is represented by two sections with a length of up to 300 km, it connects major cities and regions throughout the country, including the capital Bogota, the Caribbean coast, the Pacific coast and the coffee growing region.
